Pre-K Talk = Too Much to Think About

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Recently, my husband and I have been talking about where we want to be in the future. Before, our plan was to get our butts back to California as soon as we possibly could. Then the plan changed, and we said we’d wait till after I graduated. Now, we just aren’t sure. We know that we want to move away from here. This place hasn’t done much for us. Maybe it’s because we know too many people or because we have such a crappy past with it, but we’ve both agreed that we don’t want to stay here permanently. My husband is fond of the Fort Worth/ Benbrook area, but I want no part of that. We both really liked Austin, because of it’s musical vibe. And of course we love the Murrieta/Temecula area. Those have been the only options we’ve both agreed on, for now.

Our main concern however, is Emery. She’ll just be turning 5 when I graduate (if everything goes as planned), and I want us to have a plan by then. I know the future is constantly changing, but I’d hate to have to take her out of schools and away from any friends she's made when she's older just so we could move. We’re also keeping in mind that there are differences in how she’ll grow up depending on where we choose. We’ve seen the difference in kids from smaller towns compared to the ones in bigger cities. I know that I can't stereotype just because of a few encounters, and I’m sure it will all come down to how we (her parents) raise her. Still, it’s nice to have an environment that fully supports the same ideals you have in place. A common goal, if you will. Plus, I think it’s hard to explain to a child that they can’t do something other kids their age are doing because you don’t want them to. That could also be the push over in me speaking. In the end I can only speak of my experiences here. In our tiny town. Because I myself never grew up in a bigger city, and we currently aren’t raising our daughter in one.

That aside, I also worry about her educational opportunities. Currently, public education in America is at an all time low. Electives in smaller towns are limited. I’ve also seen first hand how unprepared some kids are when entering college. I don’t want this for Emery. So, my husband and I have talked about private schools. We have one private school in the town that I work at and it’s tuition is actually very reasonable. So it’s an option we are considering for when she starts Pre-K. But then, I Googled private schools in the other locations we've talked about and I was FLOORED. We’re looking at $5,000 plus per school year. That’s more than my college courses cost for two semesters! Now, a few months ago my parents made an offer to gladly contribute towards her education if we decided to go the private school route. I know that accepting their help would definitely take some of the burden off, but I don’t want to take my parents money. They’ve helped us out enough. So unless we decided to stay here I’m sure she’d end up in public school. For now, I'm kind of on the fence about this. I want Emery to have the best that we can give her. In all aspects of life. I want to make sure that not only I, but also the environment she grows up in, contributes to her growth and education in a good way. Then again who knows? We could have an addition to our family after I graduate, and then private school would definitely be out of the question.

So instead of just picking up and moving once I'm done with school, we now have to consider the option of possibly staying. Ugghh. Right now my head is just spinning at all of the decisions. There’s so much to consider and quite frankly, I have no idea why I’m stressing on this right now. It’s still quite a ways away before we really have to decide anything, right? I guess it’s just the inner control freak rearing it’s ugly head again. Telling me I need to have a plan now otherwise I'm a failure. But maybe this is a good thing. A way of helping us look into all of our options. Giving us adequate time to really make up our minds and decide our future with no pressure.

Then again, who knows?

Officially College Bound!

Thursday, August 25, 2011

The test went pretty well. I totally bombed the math part--big time.
But everything else I passed! Go me!!
I'm officially a college student!

*Happy Dance*

Unfortunately, since I waited this long, my class pickings were small and limited. I was wanting to take as many online classes as I could, but in the end, I didn’t get that. I will be taking two classes online and two classes on campus until December. Then, I’ll register for spring and be able to take all of my classes online except for math. Or, I can take them all on campus, but later during the day. Right now those two on-campus classes are wreaking havoc on my work schedule BUT thankfully I have some awesome bosses! And since it’s only till December, I figured I could handle it. :-)

My Schedule
Campus Classes- Tuesdays and Thursdays
Online Classes- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

The downside of this schedule is that on Tuesdays I won’t get home till about 10:30-11 pm. This means less time spent with my baby girl on that day. And, I’ll be having to leave work at 2 pm just to get to class on time. This will cut into my paycheck. Still, I’m hoping to be able to work through my lunches and even come in earlier on the days I have classes to try and make up for some of the absent time.

And now, I’m worried about my baby girl. Having to do classes online, and on that day that I won’t be back home till late are really going to cut into our time. I’m usually at her disposal 24/7, and having me not “there” for at least 2 hours of the afternoon will probably take a nice little toll on her. She’s already a clinger and she’s teething so she usually just wants me. I’m hoping to start having her bedtime be around 8 or 8:30, that way it won’t affect her too much, and so I can study till about 10 and still get some sleep!

That’s a lot of hoping! Still, this is something I have to do. If I want some kind of career and better income for my family then this is what I have to do. Our internet was installed on Tuesday, and this weekend we’ll be moving everything around to get our “office/study” set up. I’ll be doing whatever I can to get us organized, scheduled, and cleaned before I start my first week. Kind of like nesting, but for college, lol!! Then, classes start on Monday!

I’m sure that blogging will take a backseat to everything else for the first couple of weeks. I’m going to need that time to really feel things out. But trust me, I won’t stop writing. This has become a nice outlet for me and I don’t plan to stop!

I am a little nervous about school though. Now that it’s official, I’m starting to get into my own head. I really want this to work out and be as smooth of a transition as possible for us. I want to be able to learn and do good in my classes. But we all know bumps come up, and things don’t always go as planned so I’m kind of bracing myself for that. I still feel that this is a good and positive thing for me and especially for my family. So here’s to a new chapter in our lives!! Wish us luck!!

I’ve Been Had!

Thursday, April 14, 2011

So, around the time I was all prego, I started noticing all of these “Your Baby Can Read” commercials, and thought “Wow! They’re so young & they’re READING! WE have to have this!!“ I want Emery to learn. I want her to enjoy reading. To not have a hard time in school and know that she is a smart girl. Whatever she wants to do, she can! Because in all honesty, I don’t want MY life (financially) for her.

I never went to college, and only now am I looking into going back. I was an average student, but only because I had to be. If I wasn’t, no basketball for me. So, I tried to make at least A/B’s. Then, we got homeschooled and I graduated at home. And, well, you guys know the rest! But now that I’m older, I’ve noticed that finding a job without a college education is getting harder and harder to do. It’s no longer about the experience and knowing how to do things. It’s about having a diploma! A degree. Something people can say you went to school for, so you must know everything about it. And right now education is a big thing, even if the USA is falling really really short in the public education department. But still, looking back I wish I would have done it all while it was freshly stamped into my brain. Now, I’m having to try and make time to learn it all over again, just to pass an ENTRANCE exam. Finding time to do this while raising a baby, having a full-time job, and being a wife has proven to be VERY difficult! And I’m not sure if it will EVER become a reality.

So now, I don’t want my daughter going through the same thing. I don’t want her to grow up dreading school or being teased because she may not be up to par in reading and writing. I don’t want her to struggle with finding a job, or providing for her family (if she doesn’t stay at home). So I thought that if we turned her on to learning early, while she’s little, it’ll just be something that comes “naturally”. Something she loves to do! So when I saw all of these commercials for “Your Baby Can Read”, and some other parents we knew were saying good things about it, I jumped at the chance to buy the box set from Wal-Mart.

I had always read that TV is bad for baby’s, so we didn’t really use it that often. Once a week, maybe? I figured as she got older, we could use it more. Last night, was our “once a week” night and she would clap when the word “Clap” would appear. She’d open her mouth when they would say to. And she would raise her hands when they would say to. I thought “Omg! She’s really doing it! She’s learning!!” I was ecstatic and even played the DVD for a second time. Well, I woke up this morning and started reading the news articles online for today when I came across this.

Yes, it’s a hoax. A scam. Completely misleading. I’ve been had! And that totally sucks!! I was so excited last night. I thought we were really getting somewhere. But now, I kind of realized she was probably just copying our moves. She wasn’t actually reading. Crap! This was a big MOM FAIL! I should have known better.

So now, I’m a little butthurt that I spent $70.00 on something that does more harm than good. Grrr! I guess we can still use the flash cards and the books though. But the DVD’s will collect dust till she’s about 4 years old, maybe, if even then? Because too much TV is bad for babies under two. And I don’t want to set her back any more than I already have.    :-(

So here’s to you Dr. Robert Titzer, you got me!
