Baby-less Weekend

7 DAYS

The countdown has started, and I’m freaking out! Next Friday my husband and I will get off early from work, and drive down to Austin for the weekend. Without Emery. I didn’t have nails before, and now whatever was left has been reduced to nubs. This will be the first time we spend more than 4 hours away from our daughter. This will be the first time that we’ll be more than a thirty minutes’ drive from her. THIS IS SCARY!!

I’m not exactly sure how well I’ll handle this. As I’ve stated before, Emery is pretty much my world. So a day without her in it will be extremely weird and uncomfortable. I mean seriously, my stomach has been in knots about it since we decided to do this. Some friends called last weekend and asked if we wanted to go visit them. One thing led to another and BAM! We’re going to Austin. Now my husband said we could take Emery along if it bothered me that much to leave her, and it seemed like the perfect idea. Our friends have a child as well so Emery would have a playmate. The original plan was that we would take turns by doing a guy’s night (us ladies babysit), and then a girl’s night (the guys babysit). I was totally ok with this plan!! Then, I started thinking about all the crap that’s been going on lately, and how it’d be nice to get some alone time with the hubby. We talked it over with our friends and they were excited! They’d get a babysitter and we’d make it a couple’s weekend. After two days, and the idea churning in my head, I thought about just backing out and bringing Em along. But once I threw the idea of us going baby-less out there, there was no going back. So I asked my mother if she’d be ok with taking Emery for the weekend. I was half expecting her to say no, but it turns out that she thought it was a GREAT idea for us to spend the weekend alone. And that was that.

So here we are, seven days away, and I’m freaking out! Will Emery be ok? Can my mother handle it? What if something happens? Will they listen to my instructions for her? Is she going to cry? Will she be scared after we don’t come home? So many “what ifs” that keep going through my head. And then I wonder if I’ll be able to function? Not having to worry about diapers, if I packed enough food, or where the pacifiers are hidden will be so weird! Not a day goes by that I don’t step on one of her toys or find her little toothbrush in my purse (she puts it in there). What will it be like, to not have that happen for three days? Freaky, that’s what! And I’m not sure I’m going to like it one bit!

Now, I know as a couple we need that time alone. It does a lot of good for the relationship. A lot of other couples recommend it, and they say it helps you and your spouse reconnect. So that’s a big reason why I’m going through with this. It’ll be a chance for us to do whatever we want in that moment, without having to plan for a sitter at least 3 days in advance. This will be a chance for us to recharge our batteries too! Although, at some point, I’d feel guilty about the reason as to why I’m allowed to do that in the first place, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. So, I keep telling myself that this will be a good thing. Everything will be ok, and I just need to relax. We’ll be back Sunday afternoon, and I’ll get to hold my little love bug! Now, let’s just hope I don’t wuss out at the last minute.
