I want to start off by saying that Drea over at ohdeardrea is such a lovely and inspiring momma. She is such a strong woman, and fully embraces life. I always leave her blog feeling inspired by her writing, and grateful. If you’ve never read her blog, you should go check it out.
Seriously, I can wait...
See??? I told you.
Anyway, last week I was going through her blog, and catching up on all of
her latest posts that I had missed when I came across this
one. I was floored. In case you didn’t catch it from her writing, Drea is a
single mom. Her path in life has in no way been easy. But she always finds
inspiration and courage to keep standing tall and moving forward. To keep being
the best mom for Marlowe. No matter what gets thrown in her direction. This is
something I strive for myself. TO BE THE BEST MOM for Emery. To be the best ME
for my family. Though I know many times I fall short.
As you all know I’m married. But life, parenthood, and marriage hasn’t
been a walk in the park for us. Sometimes we still struggle.
Finding compromises, and balance. We get things right, and a lot of the times
wrong. Trial and error has become a new favorite motto. So I like to take advice
when I can get it. I like to have something to hold on to when I feel like I’m
failing. When I feel like I won’t make it through life with my heart in
tact. And her post could not have come at a better time.
In this post she introduces us to a book
by Sarah Kay, who performs spoken poetry. I immediately fell in love. I couldn’t
believe that someone who was so young, and not even a mother, came up with these
words. It’s like she took my feelings and put them on paper. Then turned around
and spoke them. I followed Drea’s links and was so amazed with Sarah’s work. Her
words! I walked away knowing that I needed this book. I need it for me
because sometimes I’m still that naïve little girl who can use some reassurance on life.
And I need it for my daughter, who will one day grow up and need advice that she
may not want to get from me. Because us parents “never understand”.
So, it’s made it to my wish list. Which means I’m just waiting for my
monthly book “allowance” to come back around for August. Yea, books have become an addiction so I have to watch how much I spend on them. Anywho! I seriously,
seriously, recommend this book to all women. More specifically to mothers. To daughters. To
mother’s who have daughters. To father’s who have daughters. But if you don’t
want to buy it, or you’re wondering how I can recommend a book I’ve never read?
It’s because this book, is one of her spoken poems in print. And you can
watch her perform it here.
Before I read this post by Drea, I had finished reading a book called
“Slammed” that introduced me to slam poetry. This peaked my interest. And so
after reading Drea’s post, I knew this was something I had to look into. A sign,
if you will. And I’m so glad that I did. It’s opened me up to a whole new style
of poetry. Sarah speaks out a lot about the importance of spoken poetry which
you catch at the end of her performance (the link I gave you). I think this is
such a wonderful idea. It’s important and makes such an impact. Much
more than reading it on paper, I think. So, if you’d like to find out more about her you
can visit her site or go here to see her work with Project
V.O.I.C.E.
**This was not a sponsored post. I just really really love Sarah and slam poetry.**
