Book Review- Slammed

Overview
Following the unexpected death of her father, eighteen-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and her younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.

One young man brings change to all of this. After moving across the country, Layken meets her attractive twenty-one-year-old neighbor, who has an intriguing passion for slams. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.

Not long after a heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together and the forces that tear them apart.

My Review
Layken is in her final year of high-school when everything falls out from underneath her feet. Following the death of her father, her mother uproots their family to Michigan. Rather than complain about having to leave during her last year of high-school, Layken handles the move as gracefully as possible. She has her little brother to help look after, and it’s just for one year. But upon their arrival to Ypsilanti, Layken meets Will, the cute neighbor across the street. For the first time in awhile she feels happy. Will introduces her to a world of slam poetry, during their first date, and Lake is floored by the beauty of it. Just like that, things start to look up! But it all comes crashing down just as quickly as they heat up. Will and Lake must stop their relationship from progressing and a secret is uncovered. Unfortunately, the one person Lake needs is the one person she can’t run to because he’s gone. As life gets harder, and too much is at stake, Lake has to learn to let go. But can she?

This book was so lovely. From the very beginning I found myself unable to put this book down. It wasn't so much about the love story as it was about two young adults having to grow up rather quickly. Discovering new passions, dealing with tragedy, and learning to embrace the life you are given. It’s a story about life not being fair, but at the same time learning to love it and LIVE. I love how the author gave us so much detail about the characters and their back stories through poetry! It was such an interesting part of the book. I also discovered a love for the Avett Brothers. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves emotional rides. It starts off very simple, but it quickly flips things around and you find yourself in a place you didn't really see coming. And to me, those are the BEST books out there. The story ties everything up quite nicely in the end, but it also leaves you wanting more.

Thankfully, there’s a second book out, because you’re going to want to read it as soon as you finish this one.
